'Flavours' of SCJP exam

Exam Objectives

Newcomers to Sun Certification are often confused by the 'flavours' of available SCJP Sun Certification exams.
As an ongoing process, new additions and modifications are made to the new versions of J2SE. These new features and modifications are reflected in the newer versions of SCJP exam, by Sun microsystems.
The upgrade exams enable an existing SCJP to re-appear for an 'upgrade exam' and upgrade her certification version. The upgrade exams do not cover all the exam objectives from the regular SCJP exams.
At present, Sun offers the following SCJP exams:
This exam version has dropped a few of the topics covered in SCJP 1.4 exam (eg. Bitwise and Shift operators, Math class). This exam has added new language features of J2SE 5.0 (enums, generics, varags, autoboxing etc.) in this exam.
(Confused?? Java 1.5.0 or 5.0? Both refer to exactly the same platform and products. "Version 5.0" is used in Platform and Product Names, eg. J2SE 5.0, JDK 5.0. "Version 1.5.0" is used by developers, eg., java -version, among other info, returns java version "1.5.0")
Since J2SE6.0 has already been released, we strongly recommend all the Java programmers to earn SCJP 5.0 certification, as opposed to SCJP 1.4 certification.
SCJP 5.0 is the latest version of the SCJP exam. Sun has not released a separate version for J2SE 6.0.
This exam is for an existing SCJP, who passed an earlier version of the SCJP exam. It enables him/ her to upgrade his/ her SCJP certification to version 5.0
As evident from the exam version number, this exam does not covers the new language features of J2SE 5.0. The Java programmers, who have not worked a later version of J2SE 1.4 are more comfortable with this exam. This exam version dropped a few of the topics covered in SCJP 1.2 exam and introduced a couple of other, specific to J2SE 1.4.
The exam is for an existing SCJP, who passed an SCJP exam version earlier than 1.4. It enables a SCJP to upgrade his/ her SCJP certification to version 1.4.
